Why SMC Insulation Board Is the Standard for Switchgear

SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) is a glass-fiber reinforced thermoset composite that is compression-moulded into rigid insulation boards. In power distribution equipment it has become a core material — here is why.

Outstanding arc resistance

SMC board offers arc resistance of at least 180 seconds, which is essential for arc chutes, busbar supports and high-voltage barriers where electrical arcing must be contained safely.

Flame retardant and heat resistant

SMC achieves UL94 V-0 flame retardancy and withstands continuous service temperatures up to 180 °C, so it performs reliably in demanding switchgear environments.

Strong and stable

The glass-fiber reinforcement gives SMC high flexural strength (≥120 MPa) and excellent dimensional stability, so parts hold their shape under thermal and mechanical stress.
